The Magic of Daylight

My dad never seemed to have enough light. Every room was either too dark or simply not bright enough for him. Growing up, I thought the single soft white bulb in my bedroom was perfectly adequate.

If you’ve ever shopped for light bulbs, you’ve probably noticed three common color temperatures: soft white, bright white, and daylight. Each creates a different look and is best suited to certain spaces:

  • Soft White: Produces a warm, yellow-toned glow similar to traditional incandescent lighting. It’s ideal for bedrooms and living rooms where you want a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.

  • Bright White: Provides a clean, crisp light that’s brighter than soft white but not as intense as daylight. It’s a great choice for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and home offices where balanced brightness is important.

  • Daylight: Delivers a bright, cool light that closely resembles natural sunlight. It enhances visibility and creates an energetic feel, making it perfect for offices, workshops, garages, craft rooms, and other task-oriented spaces.

It wasn’t until I started showing homes that I realized my dad wasn’t alone. One of the most common comments I heard from buyers was that a room felt too dark or lacked enough natural light.

That experience changed the way I stage homes. Today, I almost always replace existing bulbs with daylight or bright white bulbs before a showing. The brighter lighting makes rooms feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting. Buyers can always switch to soft white bulbs after they move in if they prefer a warmer atmosphere.

From my experience, daylight and bright white bulbs consistently create the biggest “wow” factor when showing a home. They make spaces feel fresher, brighter, and more spacious—even in older homes or rooms that people traditionally associate with softer lighting, like bedrooms and living rooms. It’s one of the simplest and most affordable changes you can make to improve a home’s first impression.
