During a house renovation, I removed the bathtub drain trim to replace it. The moment it came loose, a loud clunk echoed through the bathroom. My heart sank—the waste arm had dropped straight behind the wall.

Not overthinking it, I headed off to Ace Hardware for a new drain kit, figuring I’d fish out the pipe when I got back.

While I was out, my mom decided it was a great time to clean her mop. She turned on the tub faucet, and without the waste arm connected, water poured directly into the floor structure and soaked right through the downstairs ceiling.

When I pulled up to the house, my mom met me in the street. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “For what?” I asked.

Then I walked inside, looked up, and saw the water-logged damage. Honestly, all I could do was laugh, as she told me in her frenzied tone, “Daniel is Coming!” We were already knee-deep in renovations, so this just meant adding one more item to the running list. 

A neighbor wandered over to check out the commotion. After hearing the story, he looked bewildered by my composure. “You don’t seem very upset,” he noted. I smiled and said, “Daniel’s coming.”

Right on cue, my brother pulled into the driveway. He had already heard all about it.  We exchanged a quick look, nodded, as if to say. “Yeah, we’ve got this.”

With the ceiling now wide open, my dad instructed us to use a 2×4 to prop up and secure the waste arm before patching the drywall—just in case there’s a next time.

Watching the seamless teamwork, the neighbor immediately chimed in, “Can I get your brother’s phone number?” I laughed. “No way—he’s not insured…”

What should have been a ten-minute trim replacement turned into a full-scale ceiling repair.   It’s a reminder that when things fall apart, composure, humor, and teamwork will get you through it every time.  Mistakes and unexpected setbacks happen, especially during major projects. Choosing to laugh and roll with the punches rather than reacting with anger turned a potential crisis into a manageable bump in the road.
